Wojciech Majewski

pianist, composer, arranger, educator

About me

Wojciech Majewski is one of the most outstanding Polish pianists. He is a virtuoso performing both jazz and classical music. In addition, he became known as an interesting, original composer. He comes from a family with rich musical traditions. His father Henryk Majewski was one of the most prominent figures of Polish jazz.

Comprehensively educated, Wojciech Majewski graduated in piano from Warsaw’s F. Chopin Academy (now University) of Music in 1999. In 2001 Majewski released his first album, Grechuta, containing jazz arrangements of songs by the famous Polish singer-poet. The album was enthusiastically received by the critics, the artistic society and the audience. His second CD, Zamyślenie (Meditation, 2003), dominated by the artist’s own original compositions, received the bestselling album award “Empik Ace 2003” in the category of Polish jazz. Both his first two albums and the third, Opowieść (The Tale) of 2009 attracted the attention of the phonographic industry – a fact confirmed by five “Fryderyk” nominations in the categories of “best jazz album of the year” and “jazz musician of the year”.

The autumn of 2006 saw the publication (by Znak) of Majewski’s book Marek Grechuta – Portrait of an Artist, which became a bestseller.

Wojciech Majewski is one of the few artists whose musical abilities and versatility allow them to compose and perform both classical and jazz music. His Suite for cello, piano and string orchestra (2008) was performed by the composer himself with Andrzej Bauer and Aukso Orchestra under Marek Moś. His composition Homage to Stravinsky for solo piano (from the CD Zamyślenie) presents an interesting use of modern musical language. In the autumn of 2005, having delivered a series of lectures on the music of Alexander Scriabin, Majewski gave a concert at the A. N. Scriabin Memorial Museum in Moscow, performing the great composer’s Sonata-Fantasy Op. 19. In November 2014 the artist, accompanied by the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra, celebrated the Jan Karski Year with a much acclaimed performance of Henryk Wars’s Piano Concerto.

In 2015, the album “Wojciech Majewski plays Scriabin” was released. One of its first listeners was Nigel Kennedy, who in a text included in the booklet called Majewski “the greatest Polish pianist of our time”. In 2016, the Sony Music label resumed the album “Grechuta” enriching the original material with additional recordings. The reedition coincided with the fifteenth anniversary of the release of the album. The album has collected great press reviews and has been featured on lists of bestsellers.

In 2016, the pianist took part in the recording of the album “Tribute to Henryk Majewski”, which in 2017 received the “Fryderyk Award” in the category of “jazz album of the year”.

The next album of the artist titled “There was no summer” was released in  autumn 2017.
